Winter has really kicked in which has seen some trying conditions on game day so remember to dress up warm to protect yourself from the elements. The pot belly is keeping us all warm on Thursday nights and Saturday and having the remnants of the gym floor to fuel it is cost effective.

A big thanks to all of our volunteers and foot soldiers who do the behind the scenes stuff so as to share the load. A big thanks to those:
  • That put out the ropes and flags
  • Sort the gear and grounds
  • Help prepare for events
  • Switch the gas bottles over so as to give us warm showers
  • Keep the club and its surrounds clean and tidy
  • Referee and help out teams
  • Cheer on the sidelines
  • Support their wives/husbands/partners from behind the scenes
  • Who join us in the clubrooms on Saturday
  • And who support the club in many other ways.
Many hands make light work and keep volunteers in the game longer. Thank you.

Giddy Up!

MEN'S PREMS | Amalgamated Builders Limited: Southern Premiership
Played Dunedin City Royals FC at The Turf
LOSS 2 - 1

1. Tom Stevens. 2. Michael Sannum. 3. Alex Cornille. 4. Mitchell Gray. 7. Shay Thom. (C) 8. Max Johnson. 9. Sam Cosgrove. 10. Finn Bielski-Cook. 11. Arnon Tapp. 14. Nathan Wilkie. 15. Ben Sinnott. 16. Taku Maviza. 17. Harley Rodeka. 19. Luke Clissold. 20. Oscar Black.

Big game vs Dunedin City Royals this, and to be honest we were a shadow of ourselves in this game, knowing full well that if we win this game we have a great chance to go top if we win our game in hand. We are, I believe, capable of being a lot better. The Royals were a lot quicker to second phase ball, moved the ball quicker and were more reactive to circumstances on the day. Is it the Turf, is it playing on a Sunday? I believe not, were we prepared, damn right we were.

Our match day squad had some players coming in after great performances on Monday earning the right to start in Ben Sinnott and Alex Cornille and they didn't disappoint at all either. The rest of our match day squad was the best of what we had available with worthy substitutions as well if we needed to get something latter on. We start of slowly getting used to the pace, once we got into the game we were good. We played some very good patches of play moving the ball quickly and moving the Royals around, our goal is scored from a corner with a well flighted delivery from Luke Clissold being knocked into Nathan Wilkie who timed his run perfectly and unopposed headed home our opening goal. We had a few other chances that we just couldn't get onto through a lack of movement or poor finishing.

Half time comes and goes with very clear messages of being brave in possession,  and to stop playing fearfully as we definitely look as though we are worried about making mistakes. Long and short of it, Dunedin City Royals score their first goal from a penalty, which to be fair was a penalty, their second is from a poor defensive mistake that has their striker run through and with Tom closing his space down the striker scores a deserved winning goal.

We have a penalty claim waived away by the referee which was very similar to The Royals one and for me shows the lack of consistency in decisions by match officials.
For me there were some good individual performances in Ben and Alex and Oscar and Mitch, Mike, Shay. Man of the match was very easy, Tom Stevens saved us on so many occasions, it was one of his best performances to date and his determination and his bravery nearly got us over the line. To say we lost 2-1 was all down to Tom, it should have been 5 or 6. Well done Tom.

We March on with a very hard assignment this coming weekend away to Queenstown,  we need to flush the last game and work hard this week on figuring out who really wants to play!

Regards
Terry.

WOMEN'S PREMS | Affinity Mortgage Advisors: Kate Sheppard Cup
Played Mosgiel AFC at Memorial Park
WIN 0 - 4

1. Tessa Nicol, 2. Sophia Body, 4. Holly Johnstone, 6. Holly White, 7. Amelia Newlands, 8. Alex Maffey, 9. Jasmine Prince, 10. Emma Black, 11. Sam Grey, 12. Kate Watson, 13. Zara Pratley, 14. Beth Fitchett, 16. Isy Parry, 17. Rebecca Johnstone, 18. Amelie East Giles

The weather was absolutely miserable at Mosgiel’s Memorial Park, with wind, hail, and rain thrown against us throughout the game. Mosgiel fielded a very defensive formation to begin with, opting for a 1-5-5 the entirety of the first half. The midfield trio of Emma Black, Holly White and Sophia Body did very well to receive and dribble through their defensive block, with Emma driving to the touchline to drill it back, leading to Rebecca Johnstone’s debut goal for the club. The backline didn’t have a whole lot to do besides cleaning up long balls so Beth Fitchett was pushed forward into a holding midfield role where she was able to pick out gaps in the opposition’s block with accuracy, winger Zara Pratley often finding herself running onto these. We went into the sheds up 1-0 at half time and a lot to play for in the second half. Mosgiel changed formation to a standard 4-3-3 and we were able to open up play a lot more successfully. Fullbacks Amelia Newlands and Alex Maffey caused havoc out wide, overlapping to deliver balls into a crowded box. This half we welcomed some exciting players off the bench: Isy Parry, returning from a brief injury hiatus; Amelie Giles, making her first appearance back for us this season; and Roslyn veteran Holly Johnstone made an exciting cameo. With Mosgiel sitting a bit higher, Jas Prince had room once again to wreak her usual havoc, scoring alongside Holly, and RJ for her second this game and season. Mosgiel threatened with some breakaway play, testing centre back Kate Watson and cool-as-always Tessa Nicol between the sticks. A disallowed goal in the dying minutes for the Plainsmen meant the final score remained 4-0 to the Roslyn girls.

2ND'S | Fluid Recruitment: Men's Division 1
Played Northern AFC at Ellis Park
LOSS 0 - 1
POD - Joe

3RD'S | Back In Motion: Men's Division 2
Played Otago University AFC Cobras at Brockville
LOSS 2 - 8

We were humbled again this weekend by a ruthless Northern at Brockville. The conditions were atrocious, as was our luck, with injuries and player availability continuing to disrupt our squad. We warmed up well as the snowy conditions began to set in. Conrad Sinclair stepping up before the game to take the gloves as we were without a recognised goal keeper for the match. It was a tight first half and we were unlucky to be behind 3-2 at half-time.

Two injuries very early in the game caused significant disruption.  Our RW Nish John went off at five minutes with a hamstring injury, then our Striker Jacob Scannell went off at fifteen minutes with a calf injury. Both were unable to play a further part and are out this weekend. Our two goals coming from Jake Gilchrist, and Nic Idour. At 3-2 at halftime I still thought we were in it, but conceded about twenty minutes after half-time through a well-rehearsed Northern free kick. At 4-2 we were again unlucky with injuries as Dom McPhee went off with a hamstring injury and is unavailable this weekend then George Sinnema had to go off due to a knee injury and is doubtful this weekend. This unfortunately led to a breakdown in cohesion which Northern were very keen to take advantage of having smelt blood in the water they scored another two goals to rub in a 6-2 thrashing.

With our injuries and players being unavailable due to study it’s going to require a club wide collaboration of available players to bring together a 3rds team to take on Balclutha at home this Saturday. Huge thanks to Scott Mason who refereed the whole game for us. Coming back from Covid and an injury and before he had to play his own game he did a full ninety with the whistle for us; huge respect for that!

BRUMBIES | Education Enterprises: Men's Division 3
Played Dunedin City Royals FC at Ellis Park
WIN 3 - 1

In a rainy and wet affair at Ellis Park, the Brumbies faced off against a tough Dunedin City side. The lads came out slow in the first half, going 0-1 down near the end of the half, but displaying an impressive performance in the 2nd half, scoring 3 to finish the game 3-1. Nick Shaw got himself two goals, with the third being an own goal from the Royals captain.

MUSTANGS | Switchbuild: Men's Division 4
Played Dunedin City Royals FC at Tonga Park
LOSS 3 - 2

COWBOYS | Switchbuild: Men's Division 4
Played Grants Braes AFC at Brockville
WIN 6 - 0

Joseph Bahr (1 goal), Nick Cooke (2 goals), Mark Kliegl (1 goal), Cillian Butler (1 goal), Pierre Jones (1 goal), Henry Mailing, James McConchie, Jonty Cameron, Hamish Mulvey, John-Ross Moyer, Lachie Stokes, Will Hausmann, Tom Chisnall, Nick Van Der Heyde.

We played at Brockville this week, at 12:30. We were up 2-0 at half time, then went on to score 4 more goals and finished winning 6-0 with a clean sheet which is always good.

RESERVES | David Browne Contracting Ltd: Women's Division 1
Played Dunedin City Royals FC at Tahuna Park
LOSS 5 - 1

The Women's Reserves played a much improved Royals team down Tahuna in horizontal rain and icy gale force winds. The Royals adapted to the miserable conditions far better than we did, keeping their passing short and keeping position. Their game plan worked well seeing them up 3 to 0 by half time. The second half was slightly more even, with us have more of the possession and a few chances. Unfortunately though they scored twice more and we could only claw one back. It finished 5 to  1 to the Royals.
A game to learn from and move on.

SHETLANDS | Property Brokers: Women's Division 1
Played Balclutha AFC at Balclutha
WIN 0 - 7

ORIGINALS | Hope & Sons: Masters 35+
Played Green Island AFC Squatters at Brockville
WIN 6 - 3

The Hope & Sons Originals trekked into the Brockville alps to take on another new and unknown G.I. Squatters side (made up mostly of former Tippers). Before the 3rds had even finished the early game the snow had started to fall and settle on the ground. After a freezing warm up we were underway with GI tactically playing with the wind and blizzard at their backs in the first half did not stop the slick passing & powerful running Originals, Damo opening the scoring with a header over the keeper followed by Norm powering home 2 "Norm Specials" making us 3-0 and looking good. The momentum then changed on us with GI pilling on the pressure firing off shots at a goalie trying to remember what the signs of hypothermia are. They used this pressure to scramble home from close range followed by a well executed chip and a far post header Fozz could only barely get his hands too. Luckily this reignited the lads scoring just before half to take our advantage back to 4-3.

Second half saw us off to a great start, the sun came out and Sauce fired home from a corner making things comfortable, we started playing the 1-2 touch football we play so well led by Captain Ian who had a stellar shift refereeing the first 40mins. This dominance lasted right up until Fozz clattered their striker in the box giving away a spot kick, which he at least had the decency to save. Norm then powered home his 3rd to complete the hat-trick. 6-3 winners and back to the club for Fozz who might not have defrosted completely yet to have no idea who got Player of the day, but in his opinion everyone else deserved it, eventually awarding it to Buzz for his positive attitude and pies (clearly this is before Scotland played). Big Thanks to Ref Ian and onto 3rd placed Hobbitside next weekend!

TROJANS | Connor Consulting: Masters 45+
Played Northern AFC at Ellis Park
LOSS 2 - 6

The Trojans played their bottom of the table clash with Northern on Ellis 4 and after scoring first through PJ Turnbull things looked promising to keep Northern below the bye on the ladder on goal difference. Things then unravelled and we somehow found ourselves 5 1 down until Pierre curled in a consolation goal from a corner and then they taunted us with one more to make it a 6 2 loss for the final score. A glut of players meant the structure chopped and changed for us and we have a lot of soul searching to do before our trip out to the Sandpit this Saturday where we clawed our solitary point of the season on opening day.

POD Pierre

COLTS | Downie Stewart Lawyers 45+
Played Green Island AFC Golds at Ellis Park
WIN 1 - 0

Crikey that was a good game out at Sunnyvale…. by all accounts. Captain Conbhoy had the Comm and carded a win on his first go at herding the kittens. The only goal of the match was a tad fluky GI own goal, however some credit is applied to RJ for smashing it directly at poor Logan’s butt, resulting in classic deflection sneaking into the bottom corner past the scrambling GI keeper Andrew.

The win retains our top of the table status… for the meantime.

BRUMBIES | 12th Grade
Played Dunedin City Royals FC at Ellis Park
DRAW 1 - 1

12th Brumbies took on Dn South seagulls at Ellis Park in brisk wintry conditions. The team numbers were dropping like the temp with the entire backline calling in sick. Luckily we had enlisted some help from other teams showing the amazing club spirit. With a 0-0 halftime score you would think it was an even game but their goal lived a very charmed life with shots going wide or clattering the posts and a game saving display from their keeper kept them in the game. A handball pen well taken by Zack had us 1-0 up and with time running out on the clock their striker ran from an offside position to level the scores. 1-1 it finished. The team send out a massive thank you to 12th Colts Angus Sawyer & Lea Shotter along with James Glover from the 11th grade and Liam Glover and Ethan Casbolt from the 9th grade all pulling double duty.  PoD going to Thomas for leading the team like a boss.
