Welcome to our first full weekend of winter footy on a balmy autumn day. It was great to see the club rooms full on Saturday with many of our teams successful, or gaining a good result. We are thankful to have the usage of the softballers rooms for our senior supporters to view games from thanks to the DCC. We look forward to seeing all of our sponsors and benefactors at our annual sponsors night this Friday 7:30 at the club where Dunedin Airport CEO Richard Roberts will be our guest speaker.

Congratulations to our own Neil McKenzie who was nominated as a Football South life member yesterday. Congratulations also to Tom Stevens for being appointed Southern United Women's Assistant Coach for the upcoming season.

The club has a number of near new boots (about size 8-12) for sale at the club. A donation to our changing sheds donation box at the bar per pair is ample. Boots are available for viewing Thursday nights or Saturday's. We have also purchased a very good pie warmer for selling our extended food options on a Saturday. Thanks to our eagle eyed committee member EJ, who spotted a great deal on Trade Me.

Giddy up!

MEN'S PREMS | Amalgamated Builders Limited: Southern Premier League
Played Otago University AFC at The Turf
LOSS 4 - 2

Squad list: 21. Brandon Sumpter, 2. Jak Stevenson (c), 4. Luke William's, 5. Mitchell Gray, 7. Scott Casey-Wooldridge, 8. Sam Cosgrove, 10. Luke Clissold, 14. Nathan Wilkie, 15. Jaime Le Comte, 18. Josh Lucas, 20. Michael Sweet, Subs: 1. Tom Steven's, 3. Karma Gyeltshen, 16. Zac Baird-Hodge, 17. Jack McFarlane.

This was a very interesting game for us, this game could potentially put us into a good position going into the second round or as it was, put us into 4th position. We started slowly and are shown early on what Varsitys game plan is,  to be patient and hurt us with counter attacks, which they did. We let in two very easy goals through poor decision making and also sloppy defending. We score before half time to a great goal by Scott Casey-Wooldridge through Sam Cosgroves perseverance of pressing then crossing to make it 2-1 down.

Halftime arrives and I ask the guys to press as a group and make sure that we are the next team to score! Which unfortunately we are not. We let in two well taken goals by Varsity as their endeavour is rewarded after a constant press. Our heads go down which is not good! We then find a second gear and score a well taken goal by Josh Lucas from a set piece. We look to score more but, unfortunately, we dont.

One thing I can say is we are disappointed with the result and the boys know we let ourselves down. We now have a major hill to climb against Green Island this coming week. We need to start playing with a belief in each other, with a real vigor and unrelenting attitude. Players of note today, our captain Jak Stevenson quality all day, as was Sam Cosgrove.

Player of the day was Josh Lucas, a different class.

Regards, Terry

WOMEN'S PREMS | Affinity Mortgage Advisors: Women's Premier League
Played Green Island AFC at Ellis Park
WIN 3 - 2

We were able to take the lead via Emma slotting one away from a thru ball from Renee. Sadly first half belonged to GI, they not only got a goal but also had the better of the play. Half time chat about stepping up as a team and being aware of space. As the second half went on, we got better, even though GI took a 2-1 lead. Game time kept ticking and we looked the better. Renee would drive with the ball and cut it back for Kate to finish. At this stage in the game it was all up for grabs, then on came Zara, played through using her pace, one on one with Tessa and she slotted it away like a calm veteran, at the age of 14. Still time left on the clock and the passion of the game was clear. Hayley would pull off an amazing save in a one on one to ensure us all 3 points. Shout out to Holly J and Beth for sitting on bench for us in case. Alex was great in her first full 90 at right back. Isy with her first start. Holly W was amazing in middle of Park. I believe a lot was learnt today from the girls as we continue to grow. Z Energy Player of the Day going to Sam, this young lady stepped up again, pushing herself to be better each game and was vital to us today.
Giddy Up next week Mosgiel.

2ND'S | Fluid Recruitment: Men's Division 1
Played Dunedin Technical AFC at Ellis Park
DRAW 2 - 2

The young and talented Fletcher Cup team took on table toppers Dunedin Tech at Ellis Park. The team had trained exceptionally well during the week in anticipation of a hard battle against an experienced and physical Tech team. The opening twenty minutes was a tense and even battle with both teams working hard and trying to force errors and pounce on mistakes to create opportunities to score. We created two very good opportunities to score in that period but failed to take them. Then on 25 minutes Harley split the defence with a great run and scored from a tight angle. We defended very well against a tall team who were persistent with their set pieces and putting our defenders under pressure. Tech equalised before half time when we switched off and allowed a cross to find a Tech player at the far post. At half time the talk was to keep the standards high as the first half was the best football the team had played so far this season.
We began the second half in control and dominating the midfield and winning challenges all over the park. Several opportunities were created and missed in a highly productive half. The football was positive, attacking and highly effective. Unfortunately, Tech regained the lead when a short back pass allowed them to take the lead with 20 minutes to play. To our credit we didn’t give up and only got better and better. Soon after a fantastic through ball was latched onto by Ty and he slotted it past the keeper to even the scores. The scores remained locked at the final whistle.

The boys were disappointed not to win after an excellent team performance. The young team (mostly 17-18 year olds) showed a superb work ethic, were physical and played some great attacking football. There were a number of stand out performances including Tom in goal, Curtis and Hamish in Midfield but player of the day was Harley for his class in running the show from the middle of the pitch. The team will now focus on maintaining consistency and developing into a highly effective, attack minded team.

3RD'S | Back In Motion: Men's Division 2
Played Mosgiel AFC at Memorial Park
WIN 1 - 3

A good first up win 3-1 vs Mosgiel for a new look thirds side, with only four players returning to the side from last year. We were a bit rusty in the first half and took a while to settle into the game but managed to score one through Logan Kuzniarski after about twenty minutes. Scott Glover in goal made a couple of brilliant saves throughout the first half to keep Mosgiel out. We conceded a penalty right on half time that was put away leaving us 1–1 at the break.

A much better performance in the second half enabled us to score two more goals through Shea Darwen and Conrad Sinclair. We looked more composed in the second half and managed to dominate both possession and territory for large parts. We could and maybe should have scored a couple more goals but for a great performance by the Mosgiel Keeper. All in all a good first result that we’ll hope to build on from here.

MOM - Shea Darwen with his tireless running and brilliantly taken goal. Also a huge thanks to Scott Mason for reffing.

BLACK'S | Back In Motion: Men's Division 2
Played Balclutha AFC at Balclutha
WIN 2 - 4

First game saw us travel down to the Big River City, with a strong starting 11. The game saw us start off slowly taking a while for Ian “Sauce” Sawyer to open up his account, his trade mark header from a Richard Fyfe delivery. The game seemed to die down, until an explosive run and a thunderous left footed shot gave inspiration to Sauce to get creative. From the ensuing corner, Sauce leapt into the air for his trade mark header, however this time throwing back his head and connecting for a bicycle kick. World class from Sawyer, could only be compared to Rooney v Man City from a few years back. At the break we held a 2-0 lead.

Laurie was subbed on at half time and three minutes later was on the score sheet. The rest of the 2nd half was a dull affair, Oscar managed to get a goal from a corner to keep in touch with his centre back pairing with Sauce. 2 marginal goals gave Clutha some hope, despite that they did play well and will trouble a few of the teams in the league this year. Final result saw us win 4-2 and Oscar stepped up winning the customary Boat race. We would like to thank Balclutha for showing us some great hospitality. Onto our next game where we will be playing some iteration of a Uni team at the home of football, Ellis Park.

BRUMBIES | Aotea Electric Ltd: Men's Division 3
Played Otago University AFC at The Turf
DRAW 2 - 2

The Brumbies kicked off their season against the University 4ths at Logan Park last Saturday. The team began the game with a slow start going down 2-0 in the first half-hour. A great overlapping run and strike by Ollie Benson saw the us get a goal just before the break. Ten minutes into the second half saw a great cross and header to make the score 2-2 and put Roberto O’Shannessey onto the scoresheet. Numerous chances were then created by both teams however the score remained the same at the final whistle. The team will look to bounce back against Northern next Saturday.

MUSTANGS | Switchbuild: Men's Division 4
Played Mosgiel AFC at Memorial Park
LOSS 2 - 5

Not the start we wanted for the new season. Up against Mosgiel for the opening game, we knew it was always going to be tough. Unfortunately we were 2-0 down in 7 minutes due to the fast pace attack up front. The newly formed Mustangs held their nerve and got down to business. For a bulk of the game we were the better team. Pulling a goal back before the half thanks to Ethan. The 2nd half we started well, until we had another fast counter attack to put us 3-1 down!  After the 3rd goal it flattened our hopes. We shut off and a few quickfire attacks had us in trouble. The game ended 5-2 with another goal from Ethan.

There were a lot of positives from the game and we weren’t too disheartened. We knew our mistakes so we learn and move on.  Big thanks to Dan for playing goalkeeper and to Rob and Terry for organising it for me.  Also to Danny Glover for reffing. Heads held high we move onto round 2 hungry for a win.

RESERVES | David Browne Contracting Ltd: Women's Division 1
Played Mosgiel AFC at Ellis Park
WIN 1 - 0

And just like that (after what has felt like an eternity of waiting) the season is finally off to a great start with an enthusiastic and supportive crowd gracing the sidelines. This weeks game, the David Browne Contracting RWAFC Reserves took on Mosgiel and showed just how much talent we have in our team and is a testament to the development of the women's football at Roslyn Football Club. Mosgiel proved a tough team to encounter first up with several players amongst them who have been playing in the premier section for the last few years. Goalkeeper Emily kept us in the game with some fantastic saves, and along with the back four, EJ, Alyssa, Paige and Issy, the opposition barely had a sniff at goal. The various midfield combinations of Neve, Kate, Caitlin and Hannah were instrumental in snuffing out any constructive build up the opposition might have had in the middle of the pitch, frustrating them; and our strikers and ‘out wide’ players, Amelia, Ayesha, Charli, Rata constantly threatened the opposition goal with captain, Amelia, scoring the games only goal with a lovely far post finish. The game has given us lots to work on, first of which is going to be getting to the ball first! I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again... we are far too polite!!
Player of the day went to Ayesha Horley

FILLLIES | Hope & Sons: Women's Division 1
Played Green Island AFC at Brockville
LOSS 2 - 4

The Hope & Sons Fillies took on a well organized and physical Green Island at Brockville today. The team was bolstered by the addition of Paige Julian from the Prems, Crystal van Gorp from an early retirement, and Teena Rohtmets-Joyce. Unfortunately none of these 3 are Goalkeepers so the team was also handicapped with me in between the sticks. An even first half that finished 0-1 down had a few standout moments, most notable was Emma Lester putting her body on the line and wearing one right on the nose, fortunately she was able to return to the pitch in the second half. In the second half we conceded for 0-2 down but immediately countered with a Cross-Shot from Tyla Adams which deceived everyone and ended up in at the far post. 2 - 1 and the game became a bit niggly with the opposition unhappy with our physicality when we matched them, thankfully Nigel Benn reffed and was a calming and assured influence in the middle. We were 1-4 down soon after with good attacking play from GI before hitting back with our second goal, this time a great finish from wide to Victoria Hutana. Final score was 2 - 4 down. Plenty to work on and plenty to be happy about.
POTD Amelie Cane for her defensive efforts at RB and CB

SHETLANDS | Southern Wide Real Estate: Women's Division 1

WIN 2 - 5

ORIGINALS | Adams Plumbing & Electrical: Masters 35+
Played Mosgiel AFC at Memorial Park
WIN 0 - 4

The Originals travelled to Mosgiel to play on a beautifully sunny Memorial Park to kick off our 2021 campaign and it was great to see the preseason form and confidence follow on. First half we were very dominant in possession keeping Mosgiel in their own half while cutting out any threat of the counter attack which we were very aware of. Andy got us off the mark after 20 minutes when he found himself free in the box from one of Bakers multiple crosses, taking a great first touch and calmly passed it in the back of the net, 1 nil up at the end of the half. The great thing about being surrounded by so many good players is you don’t need to bang on about what needs to change to make an impact in the 2nd half, they already know, and the 2nd half was even more controlled. Our second goal come from Glovey being on hand to mop up the goal mouth scramble and finish with purpose, the 3rd goal was a hand ball awarded by our super team Ref Craig Smart, where Captain Dan Todd stepped up picking the keepers dive and banging it down the middle. The 4th goal was put away by Hayden Baker who once again got in behind the defence with his unbelievable pace which was creating real havoc for Mosgiel all game long. The 4-0 win was achieved from a very good team performance, eliminating the threat of their attack and providing quality ball for those that got on the score board and our player of the day Dave Casbolt reflected that.
Big thanks to Smartie for reffing our game.

COLTS | Downie Stewart Lawyers: Masters 45+
Played Mosgiel AFC at Memorial Park
LOSS 4 - 1

That was quite a baptism for our first game up, the Mosgiel boys were in good form and have added some youthful talent to their squad, they took their chances well and kept our back-line busy all game. We were slightly under strength and our already huge injury list has unfortunately grown longer, Big Keriyn dislocated and tore his shoulder tendon in the 1st minute of his Colts debut, out for 6 weeks. However, all the boys did themselves proud, a few chances went begging but that’s okay we were creating opportunities. Well done to GD on racking up our first goal of the season, adding later that it’s the goal of the season.
Hats off to Chops who was quite awesome on his debut and amazing effort from Matt, Thomo, Sid and Sherbs whose continuous endeavours kept the Mosgiel defence working hard… Giddy up Colts….
